Kids' Camp Questions
Do you have to be an ELS or WELS member to attend to Kids' Camp?
While membership to the Camp Lor-Ray association for family camp is restricted to ELS & WELS members, kids' camp is not restricted by membership, however, campers must have a signature from a pastor.
What is the counselor to camper ratio?
At any time during the day, there is at least one adult (18 and over) counselor for 10 campers, and there may also be additional junior counselors assigned to help the senior counselors. In each cabin, there are typically one or two junior counselors and one senior counselor.
Where do campers stay?
Campers stay in one of five cabins, which hold 10 to 14 people each. In the event of a large camp sessions, campers may chose to stay in a tent with an assigned counselor, just outside the cabins.
What is a daily schedule like?
A typical day starts with camp being woken up by the morning trumpet reveille. Time is allowed for cleaning up before breakfast is served at 8am. After breakfast is a small ammount of time for cabin clean-up (with a daily award given at lunch or dinner), and then Bible study. Four activity periods are spread throughout the day and campers chose what they want to partake in. The entire camp comes back together again for lunch, then everyone returns to their cabin for some quiet time to read, write, rest, or perhaps do a devotion. Bible study is next, followed by more activities, dinner, swimming in the lake, and an all-camp evening activity. Each day comes to a close with a campfire next to Lake Setterbo, filled with games, stories, and singing (and perhaps a treat or two), and a final devotion.
Can children not of a certain age group attend another camp session?
If a child is two or more years apart from all of their fellow campers, the child may, by the nature of the age difference, feel exluded and separated from the others. While there is nothing that prevents us from letting a camper come and enjoy camp, parents and guardians must be the judge to decide if a child may fair well in another age group. Call Kenneth Nolte, the Kids’ Camp Superintendent, for questions.
Counselor Questions
Who can be a counselor?
Since counselors obviously play huge roles as leaders, and hold great responsibility in teaching campers about their Savior, counselors are restricted to being in fellowship with the church body which Camp Lor-Ray is associated with. Counselors must ELS or WELS.
Junior Counselors must be at least 16 and senior counselors must be at least 18. To be a counselor for the high school week, counselors must be over 18 and have completed their first year of college.
If one is under 16 years of age and wishes to help out, there are positions available for kitchen help and camp volunteers.
Is staff training manditory?
Staff training, a two night session over the 4th of July weekend this year, is not mandatory, but highly recommended.
How much does a counselor get paid?
Depending on the role, compensation rates varry. Typically, a junior counselor will be paid $150 per week and a senior counselor will recieve around $200. We understand that being counselor at Camp Lor-Ray may mean leaving a summer job, so our compensations rates are slightly higher than most summer camps.
Do counselors get time off?
Counselors are "on duty" 24/7 during the week while campers are present. In order to positively affect the campers in just one short week, counselors should be on site as much as possible, so they may not leave the camp during the week. If a counselor works a few back to back weeks, they will recieve weekends off, as long as they are back before noon each Sunday.
