New Family Camp Bathhouse

This project, along with the necessary upgrades and expansion for the family camp, has received permissions to continue forward. Indications are that, as somewhat a good side of the delay we've thusfar experienced, the lakeside lots may have its own dedicated, separate sewer system. This would be good because as we continue this projects in its various stages, the long-awaited sewer for the most used campsites could be the first thing to be installed. The other segments of the projects would then follow.

Small Projects around Camp

A new bathroom is being installed in Moldstad Hall, the mess hall. Years ago, before the Kids' Camp cabins, bathhouse, and the dining hall (not kitchen area) were constructed, the current kitchen of Moldstad Hall was all that existed. On the back end were two bathrooms, one for boys, one for girls. One of the bathrooms is the current staff bathroom in the mess hall. The other had been turned into a storage closet. It is being reinstalled this year with a small shower for staff to use, as staff bathroom facilities at camp are already limited.

The Nurse's cabin has recieved a new paint job this summer. It is now a nice sky blue color, replacing the 1980s bright yellow color. While some of the 1970's furniture may still be there however, the cabin has been significantly improved (Although donations of some nice furniture would be appreciated here).

Cabin Delay

The new kids camp cabin which had been slated to be completed for the 4th of July weekend has experienced some major setbacks in the past two months. The local inspector, though expected to approve the very simple, basic plans for a bunkhouse which would only be used during the hottest month of the year, has refused to issue a building permit unless Camp Lor-Ray agrees to insulate it and install a heating system. A heating system is deemed to be too maintenance intensive for the future. Until Camp Lor-Ray gets approval to construct it as we originally intended it to be, this project will be on hold. For now a temporary fence has been constructed around the construction site.

New Bath House & Sewer Connections

The permit for the Family Camp Bath House has been approved and we plan to return to work on it after the new Kid's Camp Cabin has been built (sooner if we have the manpower!)

Bathhouse Word on the proposed sewer connections for Family Camp is that the County/State would like us to revise the original plans, reducing the number of lift stations from four to one. This should save us a lot of money ($2,500 per lift station), but may push our schedule back to next fall as we will have to have the new septic field behind the new bath house installed to have a place to tie it into.

New Cabin Update

New Cabin The drawings for the new cabin were returned by the State for some clarifications and should be approved very soon. The plan is to begin tree removal and site preparation in April with the concrete slab being poured ASAP. That should give us May to build and roof the cabin, and June to install electrical equipment and trim out the interior with the intent that we'll have the occupancy permit before Kid's Camp begins.

After the Buildings and Grounds Committee meets next, a construction schedule will be put together for the new cabin.

New Cabin Coming to Camp Lor-Ray

Big changes will be coming to Camp Lor-Ray for the 2011 camping season in the form of a new cabin. The Lor-Ray Camp Association members, at their annual meeting Sunday September 5, unanimously voted to begin the process to construct a new cabin for the 2011 camping season.

With more campers this past year than in recent years, it seems to be an ideal time to construct a new cabin. During the second week of kids' camp this summer 64 campers were in attendance, compared to 31 for the same week in 2009, over a 50% increase. With over 30 counselors and volunteers, many campers and staff were forced to "rough it" in tents, and rough it they did. The tent-campers braved two howling thunderstorms, one broken tent, zombies, and an all-around wet week. This brave group of kids won the "manly and epic award" for the week. While tents were all Camp Lor-Ray had for many years, logistically it becomes a nightmare especially with inclement weather.

Though the new cabin may look slightly different and newer than the existing cabins, it will utilize the same layout as the existing cabins, a 20x40ft building divided down the center, able to sleep 12 and 13 on either side for a total of 25 campers. This will bring the total number of beds in Kids' Camp for both staff and campers to 97. The new cabin will be located on a hill adjacent to the bathhouse, halfway between Gorske Hall and Moldstad Hall (the Boys' cabin and mess hall).

Also included in projects for this summer are sewage hookups to all existing campsites in the family camp area. The bathhouse will also be finally completed this summer. There is much that needs to be done to make these projects a reality by this summer and volunteers are needed for all aspects of the construction process. More details and images to come as information is available, but if think you may be able to help, contact Freddy Krieger.

KinderCamp a Success

Group Picture Pre-3 The new "KinderCamp" was a huge success this summer. 4 preschool and kindergarten-aged campers and 31 campers in grades 1-3 attended Camp Lor-Ray for a two night stay. Parents accompanied the littlest ones and enjoyed participating in games, crafts, and Bible studies. (It should be noted that there were more instances of home-sickness among the 7-9th graders than this age group.) Even with a few rough points in the new schedule, each camper and parent seemed to have a great time, and when asked, said they would definitely come back next year.
