Lor-Ray Camp
Lor-Ray Camp more commonly referred to, as "Camp Lor-Ray" is
an association of individuals, all members of
ELS and
WELS churches who together own
and operate a 165 acre campground near Muskegon, Michigan. Individuals and
families who are members of
ELS and
WELS congregations are
welcomed and invited to come and camp in the "Family Camp" area of the
campground. The other area, known as "Kids Camp" is available by reservation for
use by ELS
and WELS churches and/or
their families for those activities more suited to a campground setting.
History What is Camp Lor-Ray! The Lor-Ray Camp Association had its beginning in the spring of 1965 when Rev. Robert Moldstad and Dr. William Langrader, both of St.Timothy in Lombard, IL, met and decided that they would endeavor to interest others of our confessional fellowship in forming an association to purchase and develop a campsite that might serve the Illinois and Michigan based congregations of the ELS and WELS. Later that same spring, the first parcel of campgrounds became available from the state (23 acres, including a 15 acre man-made lake). This timely development stirred considerable enthusiasm and the Association became a reality on May 22, 1965. Two adjoining parcels of land were subsequently purchased and by the fall of 1965 Lor-Ray Camp Association could point with pride to the 165 pine scented acres embracing a placid private lake. The name "Lor-Ray" is a contraction of Lorlie and Raymond Reiser, youth minded members of St. Timothy who lost their lives in an automobile crash in 1963. "Lake Setterbo" has been named in memory of Mr. & Mrs. Albert Setterbo, members of our ELS church in Suttons Bay, who also became the victims of an auto acident while in route to serve at camp. The entrance road is "Pioneer Trial" in honor of the - Lutheran Pioneer Trains and Caravans, which worked so hard during the spring of 1966 to make the trail passable. The Lord Has Abundantly Blessed Camp Lor-Ray! Since the beginning, the Lord has obviously blessed the camp. Why Is Camp Lor-Ray for Me? The purpose in establishing Lor-Ray Camp is twofold: (1) To purchase and develop a campsite for a summer Bible Camp for children going into 4th – 9th grades. The Association’s Board of Directors gives general oversight to the Kid’s Camp. The Board selects a Camp Superintendent and a Camp Manager. The Camp Superintendent is in charge of securing the staff, which provides specific and on-site supervision for each week of Kids Camp. Included in the staff are Pastors and/or male teachers who supply daily devotions and Bible studies for all the campers. (2) To provide individuals, families and groups who are members of ELS and WELS congregations with opportunities for Christian fellowship and fun at a beautiful and restful campground. Who can enjoy the Campground? Membership in the Lor-Ray Camp Association is restricted by its Constitution to members of the ELS and WELS. Any current member (membership is renewed annually) of the association can utilize the facilities during the camping season – see application for rates. Camp Lor-Ray is 5 miles Northeast of Muskegon on easy access, all weather roads. Take U.S. 31, 3.5 miles North of Muskegon to the Russell Road exit, continue North on Russell Road for 1.5 miles. The sign for the Camp will come up on your left about a half a mile after the Russell Road/Riley-Thompson Road intersection traffic lights. How You Can Support Camp Lor-Ray?
